Women's Soccer: Five Sagehens Earn All-West Honors

CLAREMONT, CA. – Five Sagehens earned United Soccer Coaches All-West Region honors as announced by United Soccer Coaches.

Pomona-Pitzer had three athletes earn First Team All-West in seniors Isa Berardo, Brianna Lau and Bria VarnBuhler and had two Second Team All-West honorees in sophomore Emily Tomz and first-year Hannah Mandell.

Berardo earned the distinction of top goalkeeper in the west after an incredible senior season so far with the Sagehens.  They have one of the top goals against averages in the nation at 0.26 along with a .924 save percentage.  Berardo has only allowed five goals this season with 61 saves and nine solo shutouts.

Accompanying Berardo in the defense is senior defender Lau.  Lau captains a backline that tallied a program best 20 shutouts this season and have currently not given up a goal throughout the entire NCAA Postseason.  Lau has also contributed on the offensive side of the field this season as the right back accounted for nine points this season off of two goals and five assists.

VarnBuhler also took home First Team All-West honors after breaking the single-season goal record as a midfielder this season.  VarnBuhler's goal count is currently at 21 and has 45 points on the year with three assists as well.  VarnBuhler has led the Sagehens on offense all season long and continues to be a goal threat in the middle of the pitch.

Two more Sagehens earned Second Team All-West honors with Tomz and Mandell.  Tomz earned the honor as a holding midfielder for the Sagehens.   Tomz has accounted for five points this season off of one goal and three assists but is crucial for the Sagehens in the middle of the field.  Tomz controls the pace of play for the Sagehens and jumpstarts an offense that scored 63 goals this season.

Mandell rounds out the regional awards for the Sagehens with second team honors as a striker.  Mandell exploded on the scene for the Sagehens in her first collegiate season picking up SCIAC Newcomer of the Year honors.  Mandell finished only behind VarnBuhler in goals this season with 11 but accumulated 23 points with one assist on the year.

The Sagehens have reached the Final Four for the first time in program history after setting a new program best for wins with 20.  The Sagehens will look for a berth into the National Championship game as they take on William Smith in the Semifinals on Friday, December 6th at 10:45 a.m. PST in Greensboro, North Carolina.
