Sagehens Open 2011-12 Season At Redlands Invitational

Claremont, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving teams will open up their 2011-12 season when they travel to the Redlands October Invitational this weekend.

The Redlands Invitational will feature teams from all three divisions, and will be the first live action for the Sagehens this winter.

"We are excited to get into the pool and start competing," said first-year Pomona-Pitzer Head Coach J.P. Gowdy. "We've been practicing for a month, and I think we're looking forward to having some real races and real competition to see where we stand."

One place where the Sagehens aren't too worried is in the backstroke, where senior All-American Max Scholten (Boulder, Colo.) returns after a terrific junior campaign. Scholten finished eighth in the 100-meter backstroke at the NCAA Division III National Championships a year ago, as well as tenth in the 200-meter backstroke, helping Pomona-Pitzer finish 30th as a team.

Scholten also won both individual titles in the backstroke at the SCIAC Championships, and helped the Pomona-Pitzer 200-yard medley relay team to a second-pace finish. Senior Chris Wright (Portland, Ore.) and junior Tommy DePaoli (Danbury, Conn.) are also back off that relay team, while J.P. Cumming (Portland, Ore.) is returning after finishing third in the 1650-meter freestyle, helping the Sagehens to a third place finish in the team competition.

On the women's side, 3/4 of the 800-yard freestyle relay team that finished second at the SCIAC Championships returns in senior Kristen Lindbergh (Seattle, Wash.), and sophomores Alex Lincoln (Palo Alto, Calif.) and Danielle Holstein (Seattle, Wash.), the Sagehens' highest finish at the event. Pomona-Pitzer finished fourth overall at the SCIAC's last season.

Pomona-Pitzer will have three weeks off after the Redlands October Invitational before returning to Redlands again on Nov. 12 for the UR Penthalon. The SCIAC season starts with a home meet against Whittier on Dec. 2 and a road meet at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Dec. 3.
