Women's Swim and Dive: Newman and Werner Lead Hens To Meet Victory

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Swim & Dive team remain undefeated in their conference dual meets, taking down University of Redlands 233 to 56 on Saturday afternoon. The Sagehens took first place in all 16 events and showcased their talented depth to collect more points. Anna Newman and Alex Werner impressed at the meet, taking first place in two events.

Ruby Epstein got the Sagehens off to a great start, putting on a solid performance at the 1-meter boards with a first-place finish at 204.80. Emma van der Veen followed in second with a score of 201.10. Their placing reversed in the 3-meter as van der Veen won first at 241.30 and Epstein took second at 188.90.

Over in the swimming events, the Sagehens won the 200 Yard Medley Relay as Angela Ling, Alex Gill, Maddie Kauahi, and Hannah Zurmuhl combined for a time of 1:47.86. Sarah Jin, Erin Bigus, Mikaela Nishida, and Kate Denend followed in second at 1:51.47.

Anna Newman showcased her dominance in the distance, finishing in first in the 1650 Freestyle with a time of 18:42.97. She still had energy to spare to win the 200 Butterfly with a time of 2:16.39 and then took second in the 400 Individual Medley with a time of 4:47.87, falling behind Alex Werner who won at 4:46.15.

In the 200 Freestyle, Kirsten Mortimer finished at the top, clocking in at 2:00.34. In the following event, the 100 Backstroke, Sarah Jin finished first with a time of 1:00.13 while Angela Ling followed right behind her at 1:00.42. Alex Gill led the 100 Breaststroke from beginning to end with a time of 1:06.40 while Mackenzie Cummings followed in second at 1:09.88. Maddie Kauahi impressed in the 50 Freestyle, crossing first at 24.51 while her teammate Hannah Zurmuhl took second at 24.89. Kauahi later won the 100 Butterfly at 57.74.

Kate Denend won the 100 Freestyle at 54.86 while Zurmuhl finished right behind at 54.97. Later, Ling won her signature event, the 200 Backstroke, at 2:14.99. Werner won her second event of the afternoon in the 200 Breaststroke at 2:24.00 while Gill took second at 2:24.12. In the 500 Freestyle, Hannah Dorris clinched first at 5:32.18.

In the final event of the day, the 200 Freestyle Relay, the Sagehens "A Team" comprised of Jin, Denend, Mortimer, and Zurmuhl took first at 1:40.09 while the "B Team" of Ling, Gill, Denise Dao, and Kauahi followed right behind at 1:40.51.

Up Next: The Sagehens will participate in the Ted Mullin Hour of Power on Monday, November 19 to raise Sarcoma awareness and fundraise for research. They will compete again on Friday, November 30 as they head across the street to face Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at 3:00 p.m.
