CLAREMONT, CA. – The Sixth Street Rivalry Meet did not end as the Pomona-Pitzer Women's Swim & Dive Team had hoped, taking a close 195-158 loss against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Saturday afternoon. The Sagehens swam well as six different athletes broke the NCAA B Cut in five different events.
Over in the diving boards, sophomore Emma van der Veen took third in the 3-meter dive with a score of 229.10, just 0.80 points behind second-place Jacque Desmond. The sophomore made the B Cut with that score, a day after making the B Cut in the 1-Meter at 243.85. Ruby Epstein took fourth at 209.80, but reached the NCAA B Cut in yesterday's 1-meter dive with a score of 231.25.
The competition pool started with a bang as the 200 Yard Medley Relay ended with a close finish. The Athenas "A Team" won the relay with a time of 1:44.87 while the Sagehens "A Team", comprised of Angela Ling, Alex Gill, Hannah Zurmuhl, and Kate Denend, took second just 0.08 seconds behind at 1:44.95. Regardless, the Sagehens "A Team" made the NCAA B Cut with this time.
Ling later went on to win the 100 Backstroke and qualified for the NCAA B Cut with a time of 56.68 while her teammate Allison Liu took second at 58.66. Liu later took second in the 100 Butterfly, finishing right behind Ava Sealander of CMS at 57.69, just 0.18 seconds behind the winner. Alex Gill also made the NCAA B Cut in the 100 Breaststroke, winning the event with a time of 1:04.77.
The 200 Backstroke also ended with an extremely close finish as Athenas' Natalie Larson won at 2:06.38. Sagehens' Lavinya Yap finished right behind her at 2:06.55 while Ling took third at 2:09.90. Maddie Kauahi later won the 100 Freestyle in a close race against her teammate Hannah Zurmuhl, clocking in 52.24 while Zurmuhl finished at 52.35.
In the final event of the day, the Sagehens ended the meet on a high note as they won the 400 Freestyle Relay. Zurmuhl, Liu, Kate Denend, and Kauahi combined for a time of 3:30.63, winning by over three seconds ahead of the second-place finishers.
