Women's Swim & Dive: No Rust as Sagehens Cruise to Comfortable Meet Victory

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Swim & Dive showed no rust in their return to the pool, defeating Cal Lutheran 229-63 in their first dual meet of 2019 on Saturday afternoon. The Sagehens took first place in 15 events with Emma van der Veen and Denise Dao finishing at the top in two each.

Emma van der Veen dominated the diving boards, winning both the 1-meter and 3-meter. In the short dive, van der Veen took first at 225.90 while Ruby Epstein took second at 169.20. In the 3-meter, the sophomore went on to win with a score of 220.55 while Epstein finished right behind at 186.95.

In the competition pool, Pomona-Pitzer's A Team took the top spot in the 200 Yard Medley Relay, as Maddie Kauahi, Mackenzie Cummings, Sabrina Kwan, and Hannah Zurmuhl clocked at 1:51.12. The C Team comprised of Lavinya Yap, Erin Bigus, Sarah Jin, and Kate Denend finished right behind at 1:51.57. In the 1000 Freestyle, Maia Pauley grinded to a first-place finish at 11:28.48 while Katherina Lauerman took second at 11:33.37. In the 200 Freestyle, Maddie Kauahi took the top spot at 1:59.77 while Anna Newman finished second at 2:01.11. Denise Dao won the 100 Backstroke at 1:01.87 and took the top again in the 500 Freestyle at 5:33.62.

Over in the 100 Breaststroke, Mackenzie Cummings took first at 1:08.99 and Erin Bigus took second at 1:10.85. Sabrina Kwan made her season debut and dominated in the 200 Butterfly, winning with a time of 2:18.26. First year Emily Brooks flashed her speed in the 50 Freestyle, bolting to first with a time of 25.52. Allison Liu followed in second at 25.60, but later won the 100 Freestyle at 55.24. Alex Werner dominated the 200 Breaststroke, winning by 13 seconds with a final time of 2:27.30.

Zurmuhl took the top spot in the 100 Butterfly, clocking in at 1:01.12 while Kwan followed at 1:02.84. In the 200 Individual Medley, Yap crossed in first at 2:18.72 while Newman took second at 2:20.29. In the final event of the afternoon, Pomona-Pitzer's Team A took first with a combined time of 1:41.55, thanks to the efforts of Zurmuhl, Brooks, Anabelle Farnham, and Tori Agostini.

Up Next: The Sagehens will travel to Orange, CA on Saturday, January 19 to face Chapman and University of La Verne in a conference Tri-Meet.
