CLAREMONT, CA. – The No. 4 Pomona-Pitzer Women's Tennis team swept No. 5 Williams 9-0 on Wednesday morning at the Pauley Tennis Complex.
Season Impact: with the win, the Sagehens improve to 7-2 overall.
Pomona-Pitzer began the day by sweeping the doubles competition against the Ephs. The Sagehens got going in a big way at No. 2 doubles as the team of Arianna Chen and Lucy Jiang didn't lose a single game as they earned a quick 8-0 victory. The first-year duo of Maria Lyven and Margherita Andreassi took care of their opponents at the No. 1 spot as well as Caroline Casper and Jay Kim at No. 3 as they both finished off Williams 8-5 to take a 3-0 lead into singles.
The Sagehens kept their strong play going into singles with an early win at the No. 6 spot with Rebecca Salaway coming away with a 6-1, 6-0 win. Pomona-Pitzer then went on to clinch with a simultaneous finish at No. 2 and No. 5. Lyven and Jiang finished off their opponents at the exact same time with Lyven taking a 6-1, 6-2 win and Jiang earning a 6-1, 6-3 win to put the Sagehens up 6-0 over the Ephs.
Andreassi kept the wins coming at No. 4 singles with a win in straight-sets by the scores 6-1, 6-3 and Casper followed up with a win at No. 1 singles 6-1, 6-4. Chen finished off the only three-set match of the day as she dropped the first set 6-2 but came back with a 6-1 win and finished off the third set 10-8 to earn the sweep over Williams.
