CLAREMONT, CA. – The No. 5 Pomona-Pitzer Women's Tennis Team is gearing up for the NCAA Tournament this weekend, with the team heading across the street to the Biszantz Family Tennis Center to compete in the regional round. Standing in their way is No. 19 Trinity University (Texas), whom they will face this Saturday, May 11 at 2:00 p.m.
The Sagehens finished their SCIAC season second overall in the standings and runner-ups in the SCIAC Tournament, sweeping Caltech in the semifinal 5-0 before falling to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 5-0 in the final. Caroline Casper is coming off an incredible SCIAC Athlete of the Year season while Maria Lyven won First Team All-SCIAC and Newcomer of the Year. Arianna Chen was also named First Team All-SCIAC while Rebecca Salaway made it on the Second Team.
Casper currently sits as the No. 5 singles player in the nation, boasting a 20-9 record overall. She will likely play No. 1 singles at the tournament and has also earned a spot in the NCAA Individual Tournament. Lyven has had a remarkable rookie season thus far, going 15-5 in singles while play majority of her matches in the no. 2 singles spot. She has also qualified for the NCAA Individual tournament.
Arianna Chen will play the no. 3 spot in singles, going 13-9 during the season with her most notable victory coming against Division II player Becky Chou of UC San Diego in two sets. Lucy Jiang will play either the no. 4 or 5 spot, going 13-6 in singles and having defeated No. 46 Beata Liberchuk of Carnegie Mellon 6-1 and 6-3 and defeating Maddi Stow of Middlebury College in two sets. Rebecca Salaway has held down the no. 4 and 5 role for the Sagehens, posting a 13-5 record in singles and having gone on an 11-game winning streak from March 17th to April 20th. Likely in the no. 6 spot is Jacinta Chen who went 7-2 in singles with her best win coming against Anu Bhadada of Division II UC San Diego in two sets.
The Sagehens have gone 49-29 in doubles matches this season and will likely roll out Caroline Casper alongside Jay Kim (10-4 together), Maria Lyven with Arianna Chen (4-3), and Margherita Andreassi with Rebecca Salaway. There's also a possibility of Lucy Jiang playing alongside Grace Hruska, having gone 2-2 together during the regular season.
The winner of this regional match will face the winner between Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and an opponent to be determined on Sunday for the Regional Finals at 12:00 p.m.
