Barton Wins SCIAC Hurdles Title By Four-Hundredths Of A Second

Los Angeles, Calif. - Sophomore Katie Barton won the SCIAC title in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 63.10, winning by four-hundredths of a second, to highlight the final day of the SCIAC Track and Field Championships at Occidental on Saturday.

Barton joins Ailene Nguyen, who won the long jump championship yesterday, to give the Sagehens two champions at this year's event. Pomona-Pitzer finished in fifth place out of nine with 81.5 points.

Barton's time of 63.10 barely edged out Ashley Lively of Redlands, who finished with a 63.14, as the two runners were neck-and-neck at the finish line. Barton set the school record in the event at the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational two weeks ago with a 62.80.

Sophomore Stassja Sichko ran a strong race in the 800 meters, clocking a 2:20.35 to finish third, while senior Isabelle Ambler was fifth with a 2:20.56. Junior Claire Brickson came in eighth out of 50 runner sin the 5000 with a time of 18:16.80.

Freshman Rhea Jayachandran and Barton both set personal bests in the 100-meter hurdles, as Jayachandran finished fourth and Barton fifth.

Nguyen tied for third in the triple jump with a 35-10.5 and also came in sixth place in the 100 meter dash, as she scored in three different events for the Sagehens, including her first place finish in the long jump. Alex Oxborough-Yankus came through with a 110-2 in the javelin for a personal best, good for fourth place, her second fourth place finish in as many days.

The track team has one more scheduled meet left at Occidental, as Barton and Nguyen will try to qualify for the NCAA Division III Championships.
