Nguyen Wins Two Titles At SCIAC Championships

Los Angeles - Junior Ailene Nguyen (pictured) won both the long jump and the 200 meters to highlight the Pomona-Pitzer Women's Track and Field team's performance at the 2015 SCIAC Championships on Friday and Saturday at Occidental.

Nguyen and freshman Prisca Diala were 1-2 in the long jump on Friday with Nguyen taking first place with a jump of 18 feet, three inches and Diala coming in second with a jump of 17 feet, 7.5 inches. The Sagehens had four of the top six in the event, with sophomores Schuyler Fox and Kaile Sauro coming in fifth and sixth. Diala added a second place finish in the triple jump (37-1), while Nguyen was fourth.

Nguyen added a title in the 200 meters on Saturday in a very close race with Tiahna Gillon of La Verne, edging her out 25.17 to 25.21 for her second individual champion of the weekend. In addition, she earned All-SCIAC honors in the 100 meters by finishing third with a 12.23.

Also earning All-SCIAC accolades with top three finishes included freshman Jessica Finn, who threw a personal best 133 feet, one inch in the javelin to come in second place. Sophomore Maya Weigel was second in the 1500 meters with a time of 4:35.88, while freshman Kristen Hernandez (800 meters) and senior Erin Delaria (pole vault) just missed the All-SCIAC cutoff with fourth place finishes.

Senior Ellen Yamasaki had a good weekend in the throwing events, earning points in the discus, javelin and hammer with seventh place finishes in all three, including a personal best throw of 123 feet, seven inches in the hammer. Sauro was fifth in the 100-hurder hurdles and sophomore Abby Gardner was fifth in the steeplechase.

The Sagehens will be back in action next weekend at the Occidental Invitational as Nguyen, Weigel and others will try to earn qualifying marks for the NCAA Division III Championships later this month.
