Track and Field: Maya Weigel Breaks School Record In 1,500 Meter Run At PP Invitational

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Pomona-Pitzer track and field teams participated in the 30th annual Pomona-Pitzer Invitational on Saturday at Strehle Track.

Pomona-Pitzer junior Maya Weigel broke her own school record with a second place finish to a non-collegian club athlete in the 1,500 meter run with a time of 4:23.56. Weigel's time is a SCIAC record, and is the 12th fastest time ever recorded in Division III history.

Senior Ailene Nguyen clocked a season's best of 12.56 in the 100 meter dash (13th place out of 72), and long jumped 17-9 in the long jump to tie for fourth place.

Junior Cat Banobi finished in seventh place our of 54 entries in the 400 meter run with a time of 58.26.

Senior Rhea Jayachandran took eighth in the women's 100 meter hurdles as she clocked in with a time of 15.23.

On the men's side, the Sagehens had several runners place well at the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational.

Senior John Fowler finished in first place in the 5,000 meter run as he clocked in with a time of 14.51.33. Andy Reischling came in fifth place in the 5,000 meter run with a time of 14.58.15.

The Sagehens also took first place in the 3,000 meter steeplechase as senior Corey Purcella clocked in at 9:07.51.

Freshman Marcus Polk clocked in with a time of 15.22 in the 110 meter hurdles which landed him in ninth place overall.

Pomona-Pitzer also took sixth in the 4x100 meter relay with the team of freshman Justin Blankson-Phipps, Polk, sophomore Ryan Abele and senior Alex Chong finished with a time of 43.50.

Sophomore Calvin Aylward ended the day for the Sagehens as he threw a distance of 55.26 meters for sixth place overall.

"Maya ran a superb race," said Head Coach Kirk Reynolds. "I was also impressed with Cat's poise running in the top heat of the 400 against some very quick women. And Julie Faust ran a great PR in the 1500, as did Jordan Jenkins in the 5000, and Heather Barber in the hammer. We continue to improve as a team. We face a tough multi-team SCIAC meet this coming Saturday at La Verne and then we make our final preparations for the SCIAC Championships on the final weekend of April."

The Sagehens next run in the final SCIAC Quad Meet of the year at La Verne on Saturday, April 16th at 11:00 a.m.
