LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- The Pomona-Pitzer women's track and field team finished in fourth place in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Championships on Saturday afternoon on the campus of Occidental College.
Junior Maya Weigel won the championship in the 1,500 meter run clocking in at 4:28.01 and finished in second place in the 800 meter run to earn All-SCIAC honors with a time of 2:13.61. Weigel's 1500m time broke the SCIAC Championships meet record from 1987.
Junior Cat Banobi finished in third place in the 400 meter dash to earn All-SCIAC honors as she finished with a time of 57.64, which is fifth all-time in program history. Senior Rhea Jayachandran also took third in the 100 meter hurdles as she finished with a time of 15.16 to earn All-SCIAC honors.
The Sagehens took third in the 4x400 meter relay as the team of Nguyen, Weigel, junior Kaile Sauro and Banobi clocked in with a time of 3:58.19 and is the fourth best time in program history.
"I'm very pleased with our performance today," said Head Coach Kirk Reynolds. "We did very well in a number of events, and placed well as a team, moving up from our regular-season dual meet standings. Maya ran a strong race to break a conference meet record from 1987, and took second in the 800m also under the old meet record. And Kristen made both finals of the 800 and 1500m to score key points for us. Rhea banged a few hurdles, but managed to run fast and finish third, which shows she's at a new level now. Abby's steeplechase third place was superb; she gave all she had. Ailene and Prisca did so well in the long and triple jumps. And Jessica and Alice were wonderful in the javelin. Alice moved from eighth to fourth with a personal record mark on her final round throw in the final meet of her career. That's pretty special. And our 4x4 team ran so well in an emotional moment to finish off the meet."
The Sagehens end the year at the SCIAC Championships as a team but will still compete as individuals in the Occidental Invitational on Saturday, May 7th at 3:00 p.m.
