Women's Track and Field: No. 21 Sagehens Have Strong Showing in San Diego

SAN DIEGO, CA — The No. 21 Pomona-Pitzer Women's Track and Field team had a strong outing Saturday afternoon at the Point Loma Invitational.

Abby Gardner led the Sagehens with a win in the 3000 meter steeplechase. The senior, who set the Pomona-Pitzer record in the event earlier this month at Strehle Track (11:22.95), won the race with a time of 11:28.86, her second fastest time ever.

Sophomore Waylon Henggeler finished fifth in the steeplechase with a time of 13:10.28 behind Cynthia Rivera, Phillie Bacon, and Shanna Shernaman, all from NCAA Division II Cal State San Bernardino.

Jessica Finn added another standout performance to her 2017 season. The junior set a new personal record and fifth best mark in program history in the javelin with her throw of 135-00.75. Finn finished second in the event. Her throw ranks as the fifth best in Division III this season. 

Cat Banobi added another top-three finish for the Sagehens. The senior finished third in the 400 meter dash, crossing the line with a time of 58.79. 

Maya Weigel was the top Division III finisher and third overall in the 800 meter. The senior finished with a time of 2:11.92, about one second off her Pomona-Pitzer record time in the event at 2:10.91. 

The Sagehens scored two top-five finishes in the hammer throw. Senior Cybele Kappos took fourth with her throw of 115-08.75 and Finn finished fifth with her mark of 115-00.50.

Vicky-Marie Addo-Ashong had busy meet. The freshman finished six in the javelin with a mark of 101-02.00 and eighth in the high jump at 5-01.75. Her finish in the high jump places her tenth on the Pomona-Pitzer top-ten list. Addo-Ashong had her best finish in the triple jump where she finished fifth with a jump of 34-05.75.

Kaile Sauro finished seventh in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 16.23. Freshman Amy Watt took tenth in the long jump with a leap of 16-02.00. Helen Guo finished with a personal best 4:52.87 in the 1500 meter.

The Sagehens took ninth in the 1600 meter relay with the combination of Watt, Weigel, Banobi and Kayla Paraiso finishing with a time of 4:08.71.

Next Meet: The Sagehens return to SCIAC action next Saturday when they travel to Occidental for their second SCIAC Multi-Dual Meet beginning at 10 a.m.
