Women's Track and Field: No. 13 Sagehens Finish with Four Team Wins

CLAREMONT, CA — The No. 13 Pomona-Pitzer Women's Track and Field team rolled on their way to four team wins Saturday afternoon in the final SCIAC Multi-Dual of the season.

From the Coach: "We had a terrific day and the team came together to get four team victories," said Head Coach Kirk Reynolds. "We had numerous people doing individual events that were in addition to their normal events, and everyone came through with great performances."

"This gives us great momentum heading into the SCIAC Championships in two weeks, and that meet will be held on our home blue track, as well. We're excited to see how we can do against all SCIAC schools in that one."

Abby Gardner had an extremely impressive showing in the steeplechase. The senior broke her own program record in the event, taking first with a time of 11:21.69. Gardner set the previous Pomona-Pitzer record earlier this season at 11:22.95. Waylon Henggeler took second at 12:38.71.

Katherine Pelz had a big day for the Sagehens, turning in two wins. The freshman won the discus with a throw of 112-01, and won the hammer throw at 133-02. Her mark in the hammer throw places her seventh on the Sagehen All-Time list. Pelz also took third in the shot put with a distance of 32-06.25. Senior Cybele Kappos took third in the hammer at 105-02.

The Sagehens turned in a strong performance in the 4x400 meter relay with a team that included three freshmen. Amy Watt, Katrina Dank, Lia Francis, and senior Cat Banobi won the event with a time of 4:08.62.

Prisca Diala had a great performance in the long jump. The junior won the event with a leap of 18-00.25. Diala also finished second in the triple jump at 36-06.75. Gianna Wu finished third in the triple jump with a distance of 33-10.00. Wu came away with a second place finish in the 100 meter dash with a time of 12.92. Watt took fourth in the 100 meter with a time of 14.04.

Banobi scored a win in the 400 meter with a time of 58.97. Kayla Paraiso finished fourth in the event at 1:05.17. 

In the 200, Banobi turned in a second place finish at 26.64. Micaiah Palmer took fourth (27.49), and Paraiso finished fifth (28.99). 

Maya Weigel added another win for Pomona-Pitzer in the 1500 meter with a time of 4:35.74. Helen Guo finished fourth in the event (5:04.83) and Lauren Hamilton took fifth (5:09.17). Hamilton went on to take second in the 5000 meter at 18:22.42 and Guo placed third at 18:25.30.

In the closest finish of the day, Weigel finished second in the 800 meter at 2:18.96. She finished just one one hundredth of a second behind the winner. Kaile Sauro placed third at 2:21.62. Sauro took third in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 16.38. She also finished second in the high jump with a height of 4-09.00.

Jessica Finn won the javelin with a throw of 134-01. Finn currently holds the third best throw in the nation at 141-03. Finn also took second in the hammer at 117-10.

Sophie Richards finished with a win in the 400 meter hurdles, crossing the line at 1:04.80.

The Sagehens finished third in the 4x100 meter relay with the team of Francis, Wu, Watt, and Kelly McHugh finishing with a time of 52.37.

Senior Day: The Sagehens honored seniors Cat Banobi, Abby Gardner, Cybele Kappos, Kaile Sauro, and Maya Weigel in a ceremony before the meet. 

Next Meet: The Sagehens compete next at the SCIAC Championships running from April 28-29 at Strehle Track. The meet is set to begin on Friday at 2 p.m.
