Women's Track and Field: Four Sagehens Finish on Podium on Day 1 of SCIAC Championships

CLAREMONT, CA — Lauren Hamilton won the 10,000 meter, and Abby Gardner broke her own program record in the 3000 meter steeplechase on day one of the SCIAC Championships.

Hamilton made her first SCIAC Championships a memorable one. The freshman, ran her first ever 10K and won a SCIAC Championship in the process. Hamilton's winning time of 37:42.97 is the fifth fastest time in program history.

Abby Gardner had another incredible performance in the 3000 meter steeplechase. The senior shattered her previous program record of 11:21.69, finishing second in the event with a time of 11:06.55. Teammate Waylon Henggeler finished tenth with a time of 12:19.39.

Freshman Vicky-Marie Addo-Ashong made an extremely impressive SCIAC Championships debut. The first year took second in the event, finishing at a height of 5-01.75. Senior Kaile Sauro finished in a three-way tie for seventh with a mark of 4-09.75.

Junior Prisca Diala earned her way onto the podium in the long jump. Diala finished with a distance of 17-09.50 to take third in the event. Gianna Wu took eighth at 17-04.25.

In the hammer throw, Katherine Pelz took ninth at 124-00, and Cybele Kappos finished tenth with a distance of 114-11.

All field events were finals, along with a handful of distance races, with the rest of the events being qualifying heats for the final session on Saturday. 

Saturday field events begin at 2 p.m. and the events on the track start at 3:30 p.m.

Scoring: The meet will be scored 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 for all events. Eight athletes will advance to the finals in all track events except the 4 x 100m and 4 x 400m relays. Nine athletes will advance to the finals in all field events.

Multi-dual victories count 25 percent and conference championship place counts 75 percent toward the SCIAC Champion title.
