Volleyball: Sagehens Fall To CMS In Sixth Street Rivalry

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Volleyball team fell to Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent No. 8 CMS 3-0 on Saturday afternoon at Voelkel Gymnasium.

Set Scores: (15-25, 10-25, 13-25)

Season Impact: With the loss, the Sagehens drop to 8-18 overall and 5-9 in SCIAC play this season.

The Sagehens were led by Isabel Kelly who led the Sagehens with 12 kills and hit .348 for the game. Jessica Finn led the Sagehens with 16 assists and Natalie Martin led the team with 10 digs.

The Sagehens came out and played a hard-fought first set against the Athenas as they only trailed by two points early at 8-6. The Athenas got hot and went on a stretch that outscored the Sagehens 13-4 and took a 21-10 lead after an attack error by the Sagehens. Pomona-Pitzer came back with four of the next five points but the Athenas already mounted too big of a lead as they took set one 25-15.

CMS carried that momentum into the next set as they quickly jumped out to a 10-5 lead that they turned into a 15-6 lead after a kill from Margaux Arntson. The Sagehens could not seem to get a rally going against the Athenas as their sporadic scoring couldn't keep up with the CMS runs as they dropped set two, 25-10.

Pomona-Pitzer stayed right with the Athenas early in the third as CMS held just a one-point lead at 7-6 early but the Athenas sprung for seven-straight points to take a 14-6 lead midway through the set. The Sagehens began to chip away at the lead as they trimmed the deficit down to 16-11 after a kill by Vicky-Marie Addo-Ashong but the Athenas countered with eight of the next nine points and finished off the match with a 25-13 win in set three.

Up Next: The Sagehens will next travel to SCIAC opponent La Verne on Tuesday, October 24th at 7:00 p.m.
