CLAREMONT, CA. – Tuesday night did not end in the Pomona-Pitzer Women's Volleyball Team's favor as the Sagehens fell to cross-street rival No. 2 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 3-0 (25-20, 25-17, 25-14). The Sagehens put up a tough fight in each set, but the Athenas prevailed due to their tenacious defense above the net as they recorded 14 assisted blocks and two solo blocks. Julia Zwaal led the team with 13 kills and reached 14 digs while Adrienne Tong delivered 23 assists and 10 digs.
Season Impact: With the loss, the Sagehens are now 8-12 overall and 5-3 in the SCIAC.
The Sagehens looked to give the Athenas a tough battle in the early going. Trailing 7-3, Julia Zwaal crushed a spike and followed with two straight service aces to bring the Sagehens within one. After the Athenas rallied to extend the lead 14-9, the Sagehens battled back, scoring off a CMS handling error and a kill by Isabel Kelly. However, CMS managed to pull away and a kill by Jackie Jones off a toss by Phoebe Madsen sealed the set 25-20.
The two teams battled back and forth to start the second set, but with the score tied 5-5, the Athenas pulled for the lead after scoring three straight. Behind 13-7, Pomona-Pitzer responded with a 3-0 run when an attacking error by CMS and two straight kills by Zwaal brought the deficit to 13-10. Unfortunately, CMS found more firepower and unleashed a 4-0 run to extend the lead 18-11. The Athenas never looked back to take the set 25-17.
Things looked more optimistic for the Sagehens in the third set when they broke out for the lead after trading points early in the set. Trailing 11-9, the Sagehens took advantage of an attacking error by CMS and followed with a spike from Zwaal. They took the lead after another attacking error by the Athenas. However, the Athenas' offense came to life once more, breaking out with a giant 10-0 scoring spree. They closed out the set 25-14.
