Women's Volleyball: Pomona-Pitzer Loses Close Road Contest To Regals

THOUSAND OAKS, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Volleyball Team dropped a road contest to Cal Lutheran on Tuesday night, falling 3-1 (25-27, 24-26, 25-23, 15-25). The Sagehens battled closely with the Regals, playing until extras in the first two sets and winning the third. Vicky-Marie Addo-Ashong led the team with 13 kills, a solo block, and a block assist while Grace Fan had nine kills and four block assists. Isabel Kelly also contributed 12 kills.

Season Impact: The Sagehens are now 12-12 overall and 6-8 in the SCIAC.

Pomona-Pitzer chipped to a 13-8 lead, but a 4-0 run by Cal Lutheran brought them within one. Chloe Kerstein added some insurance with a kill and a service ace to put the Sagehens back up by two, but another 4-0 run by the Regals gave Cal Lutheran a 20-17 lead. Trailing 23-20, the Sagehens rallied back to keep the set alive with two unanswered points thanks to a kill by Kerstein and Naomi Chen-Mallouk. After a kill by Jojo Macarthur brought Cal Lutheran within one from taking the set, the Sagehens tied it after a Regals service error followed by a huge combined block from Fan and Adrienne Tong. However, with the score tied at 25, the Regals took the set with two straight kills.

Gaby Harrison punished the Regals' receiving with four straight service aces to give the Sagehens a 5-1 lead. The Regals battled back to cut the deficit to 13-11, but the Sagehens extended their lead after two Cal Lutheran errors and a kill by Grace Fan. The Sagehens tried to hold their lead, but after taking an 18-13 lead thanks to a combined block by Kelly and Addo-Ashong, the Regals battled back with three straight points to cut the deficit to two. Later, as the Sagehens led 22-20, the Regals scored three straight points to take the lead. Fan scored a crucial kill to tie the set at 24, but the Regals finished the set with two unanswered points.

Pomona-Pitzer refused to give up, battling tightly with the Regals in the third set. After going back and forth with the Regals, the Sagehens finally caught a break while ahead 16-15 when a Regals error sparked a short 3-0 run. Kerstein scored a service ace and Addo-Ashong converted a kill to put the Sagehens ahead 19-15. The Regals took two points after, but the Sagehens extended the lead back to four thanks to a kill by Addo-Ashong and a combined block by Fan and Chen-Mallouk. Cal Lutheran later closed the gap, tying the set at 23, but the Sagehens ended the set after a kill by Kelly and a block from Addo-Ashong.

The Sagehens got off to a hot start in the fourth set, scoring four straight points thanks to two kills by Kelly. The Regals responded, climbing back to a 12-10 lead. The Sagehens went on a brief 3-0 run, but the Regals fought back with six unanswered points to take a 18-13 lead. Cal Lutheran never looked back as they closed out the set.
