Women's Water Polo: Sagehens Score Big Win Over Tigers

LOS ANGELES, CA — The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team opened with a 5-2 lead and never looked back, beating the Occidental College Tigers 18-7 Wednesday night on the road.

Season Impact: Pomona-Pitzer stays perfect in SCIAC play, moving to 2-0 and improve to 8-15 overall. The Tigers drop to 0-2 in conference play and 5-13 overall.

The Sagehens spread the wealth with 14 different players scoring in the game.

Nohea Kahaulelio needed just 45 seconds to give Pomona-Pitzer the lead, scoring on an assist by Jocelyn Castro. Castro finished the game with a goal and two assists.

The Sagehens extended their lead to 5-1 at the end of the first quarter with Natalie HillChessa Burke, Hope Grant, and Anna Yu scoring in the period.

Erica Halaszynski set up Esma Dollaku just over 30 seconds into the second period to put the score at 6-2. Pomona-Pitzer kept rolling, scoring five more times in the period to take an 11-5 halftime lead.

Pomona-Pitzer scored seven more times in the second half and allowed just two goals by Occidental. 

Burke had a game-high three goals and Hill led all players with three assists. Bella Villa and Dollaku each finished the game with two goals. Samantha MartinezKahea KahaulelioJanelle LewisMaddie KauahiCrystal Huang and Sasha Newton each added a goal. Kauahi also added two assists.

Morgan Stockham got the start in the cage, earning the win for Pomona-Pitzer.

Next Game: The Sagehens continue SCIAC play when they travel to Whittier on Saturday to face the defending SCIAC Champion Poets at 11 a.m.
