CLAREMONT, CA — The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team took the early lead and never gave it up, handing the Brown University Bears their second loss of the season, 6-4.
Season Impact: The Sagehens improve to 9-16 overall, and Brown drops to 10-2.
Nohea Kahaulelio gave the Sagehens the early lead, scoring just under two minutes into the match for the 1-0 advantage.
Samantha Martinez found the back of the net with 43 seconds left in the quarter, and goalie Ahsha Earwood made a nice save off the far post with under five seconds remaining to keep the Sagehens' advantage at 3-0 and the end of the first quarter. Earwood totalled seven saves in the game.
The Bears stormed back in the second quarter, going on a 3-1 run in the period to cut the Sagehens' lead to one. Castro scored Pomona-Pitzer's lone goal in the period off an assist from Kahea Kahaulelio to give the Sagehens a 4-3 lead at the half.
Nohea Kahaulelio scored her second goal of the game just over three minutes into the third quarter on a one-on-one breakway with the goalie to put Pomona-Pitzer back up by two at 5-3. Jessica Heilman brought Brown back within one, scoring with 47 seconds left in the third quarter.
But the Sagehens shutout the Bears in the fourth quarter and Morgan McCracken took advantage of a five meter shot to put the final at 6-4.
Carmen Rosas led Brown with two goals.
Next Game: The Sagehens return to SCIAC action on Wednesday, March 29 when they host the University of La Verne Leopards at 4 p.m.
