LA VERNE, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team defeated La Verne 15-8 in the Semifinals of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament on Saturday afternoon at Las Flores Pool.
The Sagehens were led by senior Chessa Burke who tallied her third hat trick of the season with a team-high three goals. Sophomore Anna Yu, junior Jocelyn Castro, senior Christina Williamson and junior Morgan McCracken all had multi-goal games as they each contributed with two goals apiece.
Senior Ahsha Earwood earned the win against the Leopards as she tallied her 10th win of the year as she tallied three saves.
The Leopards were led by Bustamante who led the team with three goals in the loss.
Pomona-Pitzer came out with a big statement in the first quarter as they opened up a 4-0 run in the first quarter after goals from Castro, Burke and back to back goals from Williamson put the Sagehens up four with 2:53 left in the first.
La Verne answered with its first goal of the game but the Sagehens ended the quarter with a goal from Yu off of an assist from freshman Bella Villa to take a 5-1 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The Leopards cut into the lead as they outscored the Sagehens 4-3 in the second quarter. The Sagehens jumped out quickly as they scored three of the first four goals of the quarter but the Leopards responded with three-straight goals to end the half as they trailed the Sagehens 8-5.
After closing the gap to within three goals, the Sagehens came out and opened the half on a 3-0 run as Burke scored her second goal of the game and junior Morgan McCracken netted back to back goals to take an 11-5 lead with 1:33 left in the third.
The Sagehens were 14 seconds away from a shutout in the third quarter but the Leopards scored as Guarina Garcia found the back of the net but the Sagehens held a sizable lead at 11-6 heading into the fourth.
The Leopards made it interesting as Bustamante scored two quick goals to start the fourth to cut the lead down to 11-8 but Pomona-Pitzer closed the game out with four-straight goals from Burke, sophomore Natalie Hill, Sophomore Kyla Pickell and sophomore Samantha Martinez to seal the win and punch their ticket to the SCIAC Championship.
