THOUSAND OAKS, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team outlasted Cal Lutheran University in a tight defensive battle on Wednesday evening, riding on a huge five-goal rally in the final period to take a 9-4 victory on the road. Seven different Sagehens found the back of the net as Kahea Kahaulelio and Jocelyn Castro co-led the team with two goals each.
Season Impact: The Sagehens improve to a 12-10 record overall and 6-0 in SCIAC play while the Cal Lutheran Regals are dealt their first loss in the SCIAC as their conference record sits at 7-1 and 15-6 overall.
Pomona-Pitzer punished the Regals early in the first period, taking advantage of two power play opportunities to jump to a 2-0 lead. Later with 2:44 remaining in the opening period, Kahaulelio scored on even strength to triple the lead. However, the Regals took one back 30 seconds later as the Hens led 3-1 at the end of the period.
The two teams were in a stalemate in the second period as both sides held each other scoreless for over six minutes. Castro broke the silence with 1:35 remaining in the half to give the Hens a 4-1 lead. The third period played out eerily similar to the second as both teams' clamped down on defense. The Regals managed to cut the lead in half thanks to a goal by Nicole Roed as the Hens led 4-2 heading into the final period.
After several adjustments, the Hens finally started finding the back of the net at ease. Bella Villa kicked it out with a power play goal a minute into the period and Kahaulelio followed 20 seconds later to make it 6-2. After the Regals scored with 6:07 remaining, the Hens responded with a 3-0 run thanks to goals from Castro, Nohea Kahaulelio, and Colleen Woo. The Hens closed out to a 9-4 victory.
