Women's Water Polo Set For SCIAC Championships

The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team earned the No. 1 seed in the 2018 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Championships and will host No. 4 seed Whittier College in the Semifinals on Friday, April 27th at 4:00 p.m.

The Sagehens went through the regular season with a perfect 14-0 conference record while setting a program record for conference wins in a single season. Pomona-Pitzer also marches into the postseason with the 2018 Coach of the Year in Alex Rodriguez and Player of the Year in Jocelyn Castro.

Rodriguez has built a water polo dynasty at Pomona-Pitzer as he claimed eight women's SCIAC Championships in 12 seasons as head coach. Rodriguez is seeking back-to-back SCIAC Championships this season as his 2017 squad took home the title a season ago and has five of the last six SCIAC Championships under his belt.

Castro has tallied 62 points this season and led the Sagehens with 60 goals to end the regular season. Castro has been a leader all season long for the Sagehens as one of the only two seniors on the team.

Her supporting cast features three more All-SCIAC selections with senior Morgan McCracken and junior Kahea Kahaulelio earning First Team All-SCIAC while junior Natalie Hill earned Second Team All-SCIAC honors.

McCracken tallied 63 points this season coming off of 46 goals and 17 assists while Kahaulelio led the team with 70 points this year with 48 goals and dished out 22 assists.

Whittier comes into the postseason as the No. 4 seed with a 9-16 overall record and 7-7 in conference play this season. The Poets are led by Anastacia Gonzalez who earned First Team All-SCIAC for the Poets.

The Sagehens and Poets have had quite the rivalry over the past few seasons. The Sagehens have won the past three matches against the Poets and are 6-4 in their last 10 meetings.

The winner of this Semifinal will take on the winner of No. 3 CMS against No. 2 Cal Lutheran on Sunday afternoon.
