Weigel Wins West Region Athlete Of The Year

Claremont, Calif. - Sophomore Maya Weigel was named the Division III Cross Country West Region Athlete of the Year by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), it was announced today.

Weigel earned the honor after capturing first place at the NCAA Division III West Regionals this past weekend in Salem, Oregon, as well as second-place finishes at the SCIAC Championships and SCIAC Multi-Duals.

A year ago, Weigel finished in 25th place at the NCAA West Regionals, which was hosted by Pomona-Pitzer, but this year improved by 1:43 to jump all the way from 25th to first. She won this year's race by 5.6 seconds over defending champion Michaela Freeby of Willamette, after finishing 1:38 behind Freeby a year ago.

Since the USTFCCCA began its regional awards program in 2009, the Sagehens have had four of the six winners. Alicia Freese earned the honor in 2009, and Annie Lydens won in back-to-back years in 2010 and 2011.  Lenore Moreno of La Verne was the 2012 winner, and Freeby won it a year ago.

Weigel will next be in action at the NCAA Division III National Championships in Mason, Ohio this weekend (hosted by Wilmington College).
